One thing that cannot be taken away from Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu aka Burna Boy 30 by anyone is his fantastic talent. It is not that he has the best voice in the world, or that he is the best performer in the world by many miles amongst the current Nigerian artists. Dude is just blessed and the last few years, in fact the last 4 years to be more precise has been extraordinary for his career and the results of the world acclaim and successes recorded are very visible in his lifestyle for all to see and ogle.
2 world recognised albums (body of works) African Giant & Twice as Tall, back to back, filled with different messages that tens of millions across the globe can relate with and that have given him back to back Grammy nominations too are no jokes. It’s like his other name is success and it has brought him loads of money too from the looks of it, as that’s also very visible in his acquisitions too, acquiring a blood red Rolls Royce Dawn Convertible, a Ferrari 458 Italia, a Bentley Continental GT, a Mercedes Benz G Wagon, a Range Rover Autobiography, a Mercedes Benz S class, a badass personal house built to specification in Lekki and even buying a luxury condominium or better still a fetching apartment that cost tens of millions for his doting mom in Ikoyi, Lagos and decorating and furnishing it to taste also is not beans. And it’s at old Ikoyi for that matter and yet not resting on his oars as he is still relatively young at 30 in July of 2021, still having so many years ahead to become a living legend of the entertainment industry. That’s if he continues the way he is going and at this pace, he may likely become the first recipient of a Grammy award by any artist from Nigeria.
One thing also that’s very obvious too about him is that the dude is extraordinarily pig-headed. In fact he is the very definition of unbridled and unpretentious arrogance and hot-headedness and the attitude has been more visible of late and even this writer many years ago now, long before even this level of success had come at the Okoya’s Palatial estate at one of the occasions at the expansive compound of the billionaire industrialist, had encountered that arrogance first hand.
So that he is in one altercation or another, like the one with colleague superstar Davido that nearly turned nasty a few weeks back in December of 2020 in Accra, Ghana and another far more recent, as recent as the weekend with ace footballer Obafemi Martins aka Obagoal at a popular lounge or joint is not a surprise at all. The dude’s advisers should advise him or school him on the need for him and his aides to always engage restraint in his/their actions, as that would go a very long way in solidifying his star status. Thugging for any reason, doesn’t make one stronger than others or a better star.
Away from all the shenanigans above though it’s his life anyway, The dude has been nominated amongst those that would perform at the Grammy come Sunday, March 14, 2021 and he is the first Nigerian musician that would be performing like that, not one side performance like most have done before. Burna Boy will perform at the event alongside stars like Lido Pimienta, the Colombian-Canadian musician, Poppy, the American singer, and Rufus Wainwright.
The Academy said: “All of the premiere ceremony performers and the host are nominated this year, as are most of the presenters.”
It also disclosed that the event would be hosted by a three-time Grammy nominee, Jhené Aiko.
Burna Boy has been nominated for the “Best Global Music Album” category for “Twice As Tall,” his 2020 album.
The Premiere Ceremony will kick off with a huge ensemble of previous Grammy nominees (including Gregory Porter, Afro-Peruvian Jazz Orchestra, Regina Carter, and Kamasi Washington) performing Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology)” in tribute to the late legend.
The 2021 Grammy Awards were originally scheduled to take place in January before they were postponed to March due to the “deteriorating COVID situation in Los Angeles.” In December, it was announced that Talking Heads, Salt-N-Pepa, Selena, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, and more would receive Lifetime Achievement Grammys.
