BURNA BOY WINS GRAMMY 2021: 2ND TIME LUCKY FOR THE NIGERIAN GLOBAL MUSIC STAR AS GETS THE GONG FOR BEST GLOBAL MUSIC ALBUM.

BURNA Boy

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu aka Burna Boy

Elations and kudos galore as African Giant -Burna Boy has won Best Global Music Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. His current soar away successful album Twice as Tall won the award over records by Antibalas (FU Chronicles), Bebel Gilberto (Agora), Anoushka Shankar (Love Letters), and Tinariwen (Amadjar). The win marks Burna Boy’s first ever Grammy Award after being nominated in the same category last year, which has now been renamed.

In November of 2021, the Recording Academy had announced plans to change the name of the award from “Best World Music Album” to “Best Global Music Album”, saying it was a step toward “a more relevant, modern, and inclusive term.”

The statement had added: “The change symbolizes a departure from the connotations of colonialism, folk, and ‘non-American’ that the former term embodied while adapting to current listening trends and cultural evolution among the diverse communities it may represent.”

This is a first full Grammy award by any full born Nigerian artiste/musician/entertainer/musician. Nigerian artistes have been nominated before, the like of Femi Anikulapo Kuti, but this is the first time one would be carting home the much coveted gong. Burna Boy had been nominated last year for his other album- African Giant and many had thought he was definitely going to win, only for him to lose to the peerless multiple Grammy winner Angelique Kidjo, whose mother is Yoruba said to be from Abeokuta in Ogun State, but she’s a Beninise-American, who actually deserved her win. So when Twice as Tall was nominated for this year, the excitement was much more palpable.

Now that he has finally won the award, it’s another level for the already very proud musician.

Congratulations to him though.
